About Joe

Joe’s interest in photography began while living 25 years in southern Africa.  He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Rhodes University, in Grahamstown, South Africa, majoring in Zoology and Entomology.  For a brief time he was a Glossinologist.  Few know the meaning of that word.  He lives in Parker, Colorado with his wife Jan with whom he travels and pursues his interest in photography.  Joe and Jan are both Certified International Tour Managers (CITI) and for over 10 years have planned and escorted small group tours to the countries of southern Africa.

Photography Philosophy

Everyone is a photographer today.  All it takes is a cell phone or an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera and a computer to record events, build a family album, or send an image around the world in seconds.  Photography can be an art but not all photographers are artists - nor do they want to be.  Most just want to capture a memory.

Todays cameras have become highly sophisticated hand-held computers.  Of the millions of images recorded each minute, whether with a SLR, cell phone, or digital still camera, each image is unique.  Costs of taking and developing and printing photographs have dropped significantly.

How can a professional photographer afford to stay in business and be more and more competitive?  The answer is - we have to change.  We need to stretch our imaginations and find new ways to present our photographs to consumers.  It is possible to print photos on a wide range of materials and in an almost unlimited range of sizes.  We are no longer bound by traditional printing methods, so why limit ourselves to printing on photographic paper?  Two years ago Joe began a trend, printing his images on canvas, without the confinement of the traditional frame, mat and reflective glass.  Canvas absorbs light and brings out the texture and color that glossy paper often can’t achieve.  An attactive alternative is printing on medium-density-fiberboard (MDF).  Many other photographers have recently begun to adopt these methods.
